HOW CAN AR AND VR BECOME THE SOLUTIONS TO THIS CRISIS AND THE PERFECT TOOLS FOR A SOFT LANDING AFTERWARD?

Today we are going to give a look to augmented and virtual reality, which have proven to be helpful tools in certain sectors of activity. They help maintaining a certain level of consumption and amortize financial spin-offs.

AR/VR for the retail sector

Since the implementation of quarantine in most countries, shopping malls or retail stores are closed to the public, which does not only imply a loss of money from the invalidity of sales but also a stock that does not deplete, deadlines to be paid, employees to be paid …

The e-commerce solution was found quickly, but there is a practical problem for consumers: They are often hesitant about buying goods since they do not have the possibility to try on a garment for example and the fitting is an integral part of a purchase.

AR and VR change the way we consume by forcing the retail sector to adopt new solutions to counter this crisis. We now have the opportunity to try on a garment while being at home. The main problem is that the accessories for using VR at home are not yet democratized and still limited, even if these applications are multiple. A more tangible solution is Augmented Reality with integrated applications on smartphones and the possibility to project clothes to see what we look like.

AR/VR for events or conference

This crisis also cancelled any kind of public event that would bring together many people . It is now possible to use augmented reality to virtually maintain certain events, meetings and to keep a dynamic work within certain companies even with a slowing down of global activity. This solution will be even more concrete when the global crisis comes to an end, when the way of doing business will have strongly changed.

AR/VR for the health sector

A more instantaneous use of VR/AR can be found in the health sector. For example, the University of California San Francisco has developed a molecular visual action program called Chimerax . It’s used to assess the structure of a virus. This program is very similar to virtual reality although the creator, Tom Goddard, calls it a reality mix program that shares the experience with other users. This is a good example of the application of VR/AR that can support researchers in understanding the coronavirus and perhaps help to find a vaccine.
This technology has several applications and can still be used in other sectors such as education, manufacturing, wealthness … To be continued
